Run off elections, primary elections, municiaple elections...what does it all mean?
There are two MAIN types of elections:
Partisan & Non Partisan
Non PartisanÂ
City Council and School Board elections are nonpartisan, meaning candidates don’t run under party labels like Republican or Democrat. These local elections focus on community issues and each candidate’s qualifications, experience, and ideas—not their party affiliation.
Partisan
In partisan elections, candidates appear on the ballot with their political party, such as Republican or Democrat. This helps voters evaluate both individual qualifications and party-aligned policy views. Partisan elections are typical for most federal and state offices.
What is a primary?
Primary elections are how political parties choose their candidates for the general election—and they’re only for partisan races. In Texas, each party holds its own primary. If no candidate gets over 50%, a runoff decides the nominee. It’s your chance to help shape the November ballot for your political party.
What is a runoff?
In Texas, if no candidate gets over 50% of the vote in a primary, the top two go to a runoff to decide the party’s nominee. It’s a second chance for voters to make their voices heard.
Election Dates
In Texas, a uniform election date refers to specific dates set by law when general or special elections must be held. These dates help streamline the electoral process and reduce costs by consolidating elections. According to the Texas Election Code, the uniform election dates are:
- The first Saturday in May
- The first Tuesday after the first Monday in November
These dates apply to most elections, including those for local political subdivisions such as cities, school districts, and water districts. However, certain elections, like runoff elections or emergency elections ordered by the governor, may be exempt from these uniform dates.
