Fun Facts About the GOP!!!

Formed to Fight Slavery:

The Republican Party was founded in 1854 by anti-slavery activists, and Abraham Lincoln—America’s first Republican president—led the fight to preserve the Union and end slavery.

First Female Member of Congress:

In 1916, Republican Jeannette Rankin of Montana became the first woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives—four years before women gained the right to vote nationally.

First Hispanic U.S. Senator:

In 1928, Octaviano Larrazolo of New Mexico became the first Hispanic U.S. Senator, advocating for bilingual education and civil rights.

First Black Secretary of State:

Colin Powell, appointed in 2001 by President George W. Bush, became the first African American Secretary of State, earning global respect and admiration.

Longest-Serving African American U.S. Senator:

Edward Brooke of Massachusetts, elected in 1966, was the first Black senator elected by popular vote and served two terms as a Republican.

The Rockwall County Republican Party works to promote conservative values, support Republican candidates, and engage voters in the political process. We organize local events, voter registration drives, educational forums, and grassroots efforts to ensure Republican victories at the local, state, and national levels. Our purpose is to empower citizens, uphold the Constitution, and strengthen our community through active civic involvement.

There are many ways to get involved! You can volunteer for various activities, assist with campaigns, serve as a precinct chair or block captain, attend monthly club meetings, or join one of our community block walks. Whether you have a few hours or want a more active role, we’ll help you find the right fit. 

A precinct chair is a local leader elected to represent and organize Republican voters within their voting precinct. They assist with voter outreach, support GOP candidates, and serve as a vital link between the county party and the community.

To become a precinct chair, you must live in the precinct and be a registered Republican voter. If the position is vacant, you can be appointed by the county executive committee. If it’s filled, you can run in the next primary election. Contact us to check availability and learn more about the process.

Yes! Early voting is available to all registered voters in Rockwall County and is a convenient way to avoid long lines on Election Day. The Rockwall County Republican Party will post early voting dates, times, and locations on our Elections page ahead of each election. Be sure to bring valid form of identification when you go to vote.

To register to vote in Texas, you must fill out a voter registration application and mail it to your county’s elections office. The Rockwall County Republican Party provides resources and reminders to help you get registered on time. Party conventions are gatherings where Republicans come together to shape the platform and select delegates for higher-level conventions. They begin at the precinct level, then move to the countystate, and eventually the national convention.

To attend your precinct convention in Texas, you must have voted in the Republican Primary that same year. If you didn’t vote in the primary, you may still attend by signing an oath of affiliation. Check out our Conventions page for more info.

No, the Rockwall County Republican Party does not endorse candidates during Republican primaries. Our role is to ensure a fair and transparent process so voters can choose their preferred nominee without party interference. Once the primary is over, we support the Republican candidates who win and move on to the general election.

There are plenty of ways for young conservatives to get involved! High school and college students can volunteer on campaigns, help with events, and help with our block walks. One great way to connect is by attending meetings of the Young Republicans of Rockwall County, a club specifically for young adults who want to make a difference. It’s a great place to network, learn, and take part in local political action.
